In addition to making crafty things for myself and my family and friends I also teach crochet at a weekly class and during March we made small bowls from T-Shirt yarn. These bowls are quick and simple to make and can be easily customised which is why I love making them.
If you’re wanting to make one of your own the instructions are below using UK crochet terms or if you are a South Australian local like me and would like to take a crochet class please check out Classie.
- 10mm crochet hook
- 1x ball T-Shirt yarn
MR – magic ring
ch – chain
R – round
st/s – stitch/es
ss – slip stitch
tr – treble
(#) – stitch count
Begin with a MR or ch 5 and join with a ss to form ring
R1: ch 3 (counts as tr here and throughout), 9 tr in ring, join to 3rd ch with ss. (10)
R2: ch 3, tr in same st, *2 tr in next st, repeat from * to end, join to 3rd ch with ss. (20)
R3: ch 3, tr in same st, tr in next st, *2 tr in next st, 1 tr in next st, repeat from * to end join to 3rd ch with ss. (30)
R4: ch 3, tr in same st, tr in next 2 sts, *2 tr in next st, 1 tr in next 2 sts, repeat from * to end, join to 3rd ch with ss. (40)
If you would like the right side of the base on the inside of the bowl turn your work now. If you would like the right side of the base on the outside or are not concerned then continue working in the same direction.
R5: ch 3, working in back loops only *tr in next st, repeat from * to end. (40)
R6-7: ch 3, *tr in next st, repeat from * to end. (40)
Tie off and weave in ends.
As I mentioned this bowl can be easily customised. You can do this with colour changes or changes to the shape and size of the bowl as I did with my basket below.
To give the bowl a more rounded look work in both loops rather then back loops only on round 5.
To increase the diameter of the base of the bowl simply continue to increase until the desired size is reached before beginning the sides of the bowl on round 5.
You can increase the height of the bowl by continuing further rounds after round 7.
If you have any questions or ideas for the bowls let me know in the comments section below.
